No matter how diligent you are in your home dental care regimen, you should still get a dental exam and cleaning twice per year!
DENTAL EXAMS
No matter how diligent you are in your home dental care regiment, you should still get a dental exam and cleaning twice per year. You cannot underestimate the importance of regular dental exams not only for the care of your teeth, but also your physical health. Regular checkups can be essential for early detection of more serious problems.
During your hygiene exam you will be asked for a comprehensive medical history. We will evaluate your dental health and give you a cleaning customized to your needs. After your cleaning, the dentist will look at your x-rays, do an oral cancer screening, checking your lips, tongue, throat and gums for signs of any irregularities. We will also give you a gum disease evaluation, checking the gums and the bone around the teeth for any signs of periodontal disease.
DENTAL X-RAYS
It is our preference to take a complete set of x-rays for new adult patients. We welcome any x-ray records from your previous dentist. If they are current, it may modify the number of x-rays we need to take. X-Rays are essential for detecting decay, tumors, cysts and bone loss. When necessary we may also take a Panorex x-ray of your mouth.
The Panorex unit makes a complete half circle of your mouth and produces a two dimensional picture of your teeth and jaw bones. It is especially helpful in capturing pictures of your wisdom teeth. They are also used to help determine tooth and root positions.
FLOSSING
Daily flossing is an effective way to clean teeth where brushing can’t reach. Dental floss breaks up and removes plaque from between teeth and the gum line, where periodontal disease often begins. If you find flossing awkward, be sure to ask the doctor about dental floss holders, which are available. In recent years, we have become more aware of the benefits of flossing and better systemic health.

HOME CARE
During your dental hygiene visit you will be given instructions on how to properly care for your teeth and gums. What can you do? Brush at least twice a day — in the morning after breakfast and in the evening before you go to bed. If possible, brush after every meal. Floss after brushing. Clean your tongue on a daily basis.
